Caregiver Training/Coaching
Pathways Therapy is pleased to offer individualized occupational therapy treatment for caregivers.
What skills could I learn?
Parenting can feel challenging, and often without much guidance or with too much information and advice that it is overwhelming. This can be particularly challenging for parents with one or multiple children with neurodivergence, mental health needs or other special needs.
During Occupational Therapy Caregiver Coaching sessions, we would look at specific strengths and areas of challenge as a parent. We would explore how this relates to supporting your child’s or teen’s emotions, behaviours, sensory needs, independence, school participation, and more. We would look at your skills and ability to manage caregiver stress, schedules and routines, and multiple competing demands, and work with you to develop goals and a treatment plan.
How will this support my child(ren)?
As paediatric Occupational Therapists, we have experience working with children and teens with a range of different needs and can offer evidence-based strategies based on your child’s strengths and needs. As the caregiver, we would equip you with tools you need to guide and build your children(s)’ skillset. In addition to caregiver skills, we would look at the home environment, and work with you to create a supportive home environment for and your child/children
What makes this different from a parenting course?
Parenting courses can provide a range of excellent, evidence-based strategies to support you as a parent, however they are often not personalized to individual differences or adapted to the needs of specific families.
During Occupational Therapy, we assess your parenting strengths and areas of need, and work collaboratively with you to build your skillset as a parent, based on the resources you have available, your learning style, your family and health history.
What does assessment and treatment look like?
We provide a 60-minute initial assessment to learn about your family situation and parenting skills and style. Follow up sessions would be 30-minute or 50-minute one-on-one treatment sessions based on the identified caregiver goals. Sessions can be completed in person or virtually. Group sessions are also available for joint treatment with a child if appropriate.
What is the format of sessions?
Assessment and treatment sessions can take place in-person at our clinic, virtually over video-call or through a phone call, based on your preference. While the session will be billed under one of the caregivers names, additional caregivers are welcome to join sessions.
Can I do caregiver coaching alongside Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment for my child?
Yes. We highly recommend opting for caregiver coaching alongside treatment of your child, as families that work on building their child or teens skills alongside their parenting skills benefit the most from Occupational Therapy.
